Recent reports indicate that Apple is shifting its strategy with the production of the Vision Pro headset. The tech giant has decided to drastically reduce production, with the possibility of completely stopping it by the end of 2024.
According to sources close to Apple’s supply chain, this reduction began in early summer. It appears that Apple’s warehouses are now filled with these headsets, and this stock should meet market demand for the product’s lifespan.
Two main factors contributing to the lukewarm reception of the Vision Pro are its high price and the lack of suitable content. So far, enough components have been produced to manufacture 500,000 to 600,000 units, and some suppliers stopped production as early as June.
The Chinese company Luxshare, responsible for assembling the headsets, reduced daily production to 1,000 units in early December, which is half of the previous capacity. However, production lines remain operational, and if demand increases, the company could return to its original output.
Interestingly, Apple has paused the development of the second-generation Vision Pro and is instead focusing on creating a more affordable version. The company has instructed suppliers to prepare for the production of 4 million units of this budget model, a significant number but still half of the initial target for the Vision Pro.
Nevertheless, the current generation of Vision Pro is expected to receive only limited updates. Apple may release an improved version with upgraded processors and slight design changes, allowing the company to utilize existing components in the supply chain.
